Were you a Spelling Bee participant? That's great to hear. I still remember that I spelled "sepulcher" incorrectly because I inverted the final two letters as if I were British (i.e. "sepulchre"). I think that the only place that I had seen the word was the King James Version of the Bible. Oh well.
May the most dedicated student win! And may the peculiar orthography of the English language continue to delight nerds for generations to come!
Yes, I was a proud winner of my elementary school's 4th grade spelling bee. I consider this to be one of the finer moments of my public school education, which is why seeing my students inspired to study vocabulary and win the spelling bee resonates on a personal level for me.
As euphoric as the rewards for winning may be, spelling bees are rife with disappointments, which is sad to see in the disqualified students. The fact that you still remember your dismissal word (I remember all of mine from subsequent years- acquire, quiche, and isosceles) gives proof that spelling bees are defining academic moments.
That's great you get to do this with your kids!! It's definitely something I'll look into implementing next year!! Nerves got the best of me in 7th grade at the regional spelling bee, I dropped the "U" in chauffeur, and it left me with a heartbreaking 2nd place. Lol I'll never forget my component's smirk.
P.S.- my Extran Hero has lead me to a promising career (ok, maybe I exaggerate a bit) in journalism. http://www.madbudget.com/how-to-get-an-abono-transporte-metro-pass-madrid/
